Diabetic Health Clinic Newsletter – 3/11/2014

Greetings,

Last week we looked at the sugar addiction issue. This week look dig a little deeper. If sugar is in fact addictive, and if in fact people break the addiction, then going on how other addictions work, for example alcohol or tobacco amongst many others it stands to reason that some people will return at some stage to the sugar addiction that they broke.

There is one thing that one should understand about sugar addiction. Once it is broken it is gone. It is unlike other addictions that niggle away at a person for a long period of time. Sugar as a substance and the physical addiction to the substance can be very hard to break. Once it is broken the body does not crave the substance any more. Depending on how the addiction was broken a person may even find the smell and look of sugary or processed food repulsive and sickening. If you think about it that is a powerful place to be in.

If you want to break a sugar addiction in a way that will give you the power to succeed then click this link to join our January 2015 program.

When a person is in such a place natural foods taste wonderful, better than any food that may have been eaten before. The food provides flavour experiences that have not been experienced before. The food is more satisfying than food that has been eaten while the sugar cravings were present. The food is nutrient dense so it is good for a person and it provides many wonderful health benefits.  So what is it with people returning to their old habits?

Anyone that has changed their lifestyle must guard it. There are three choices that everyone experiences. Even though there are no physical attachments to the old foods, there is the social pressure, stress and sometimes an occasion where someone does not want to say no for the fear of being rude.

Let me make us make one thing very clear. It is not possible for someone who has undergone a massive lifestyle change to simply just forget and put processed food in their mouth. There is no doubt that during the seconds leading up to the moment where the first bit of processed food is entering the mouth after such a huge effort to break the addiction, there will be a very intense mental gymnastics session going on. Should I, should I not? What will it taste like? Can it really be that bad? The point is that a person who experiences a huge lifestyle change first needs to find an excuse which will be so good that eating the first bit of processed food is totally justified.

So here are the choices that everyone who has broken their addiction to sugar faces.

1. Never go back to putting into your mouth anything processed, ever! This gives a person the best possible chance of being healthy over the long term.
2. Live dangerously, experimenting with processed foods, this option invariably leads to a new sugar addiction and leads a person back to their old habits.
3. Don’t worry about the lifestyle change, just enjoy life and eat what you want. Nothing changes, health is compromised, weight usually keeps going on and this option along with a failure in option two gives the person the best possible chance of contracting a chronic disease like type 2 diabetes.

That is it. The three choices. It is pretty simple really.

Next week we will be looking into how you can consistently keep choosing option 1.
