Diabetic Health Clinic Newsletter – 13/10/2014

Greetings,

One small town in Victoria, Australia has made some incredible health changes. Ararat, sometime nick named Arafat has had one of most disturbing statistics that a town could ever have. We all know that Australia is one of the fattest countries in the world, Ararat however was the fattest town in Australia. Can you imagine that a town of just 8000 people, on a yearly basis consumed 19 million dollars of junk food. 67% of the population were either overweight or obese.

Then last year the biggest looser came to town. This was a turning point for Ararat, the show motivated people to start doing physical exercise and to start making significant changes to their lifestyles. The council got behind the effort. Today you can find people walking in the mornings and the evenings, the town has come alive. This all goes to show just how much of an impact a community effort can make. They are now close to the national average when it comes to weight so they can no longer be called Arafat. Congratulations Ararat.

On the 13th of October the Australian ABC aired a program on 4 corners about the town. It was interesting to see that the town is looking for more. The question they ask is how can we improve our situation even more? It was also interesting to hear that the severe boot-camp style program works, but many people regain at least some of the weight that they lost. It is also interesting to observe how the food industry reacted to all of this. This is exactly the same story we heard from the tobacco industry. Can you imagine that the food industry regulates itself? They can do whatever they want! They make their food incredibly tasty and addictive. There is now no question about this. Studies have proven it.

It was also interesting to hear that in the end it is the over consumption of sugars that are causing the fat issue. These sugars live in our processed foods without us even knowing. It was just as interesting to hear that 80% of weight loss is diet and the other 20% is physical activity. The bottom line is the same message is out there over and over again.

If you are wanting to make significant lifestyle changes where you can happily embrace a whole foods diet that will provide you with the correct nutrition, without providing an oversupply of fat causing sugar then don’t miss our next conference call / on-line program. The program will commence on the 14th of January at 7.30 p.m. AEST or Brisbane time. To ensure that you don’t miss out click on this link.
