Diabetic Health Clinic Newsletter – 17/11/2014

Greetings,Over the last few weeks we have been looking at some very interesting subjects. We have touched on the subject of addiction and in particular sugar addiction, last week we looked at what it takes to stay on track and in particular we looked to how to deal with being looked at as someone who is different.  Let us make a very important point here. We are talking about being looked at as different simply because the majority of the worlds population do not eat in a healthy way. If you do happen to eat in a way that is healthy you are ail of a sudden considered different. That is a very sad situation.

Invariably as people realise that you don’t eat anything that is processed they become very confused. One of the big issues with how people understand foods is based on what the marketing by the multinational companies has taught them. Let’s for just one moment explore some of the things that people do understand.
1. Gluten free. There are many products out there that are gluten free. This is because people cannot handle the volume of gluten that is in our modern day wheat. Not many people realise that the wheat we eat today is humanities first genetically modified crop. It is called seem dwarf wheat and what a terrible failure this experiment has been. You can learn more about it by watching “A perfect chronic poison”. This wheat contains a huge amount of gluten.
2. Diary free. Again there are some people who are dairy intolerant and the idea of not consuming diary is very well understood by the broader community.
3. Nut allergies. Again this issue is recognised by the broader community and nobody blinks an eyelid at this issue. If someone is allergic to nuts then everyone is comfortable with the fact that you are very careful with what you eat.
4. Celiacs are also well understood.  Even though some people may not know what this actually means they understand that this is a condition where a special diet is implemented. As long as you say you are a celiac everyone wants you to eat differently.
5. Vegetarian or vegan. Although many people look at this group as unusual they are tolerated. When you say you are a vegetarian or vegan you will often get the roll of the eyes and you know that they are thinking, here we go here is another one. Regardless of how people feel, this group is accepted to the point where even a steakhouse will have options for their vegetarian patrons.

Now here is the one that confuses people.

Have you ever said that you do not eat processed food?

If you have you will know that most people have no idea what you are talking about. They loose it totally. They will often  ask, so you are a vegetarian? Often they will just simply say so what do you eat? We find it unbelievable that such a simple think is so complicated. Don’t you? There is no doubt that the factory made foods are the major contributing factor to our chronic diseases. Hasn’t the food industry done a fantastic job of educating people in a way where their sales are guaranteed?

This week we want to share with you what to say to someone that is asking you this difficult question. “So what do you eat?”

We have thought long and hard about this. We have tried to answer the question for people on many occasions with varying degrees of success. The whole answer can be complex with many different explanations and ways of looking at things to get the confused un-confused. What we need is a simple answer, a one liner that once delivered leaves no doubt about what you eat and is able to leave the person asking the question comfortable with what you eat.

So here it is:

I eat everything that people used to eat before the first food factory was ever invented.

From here you will often be confronted with anther question and that is, “doesn’t that limit you a lot?” That question we will have a look at next week.
