24/05/2013 – High Fructose Corn Syrup can produce a similar addiction to cocaine

On the 22nd of May 2013, Professor Francesco Lerri from the University of Guelf presented his latest research at the 2013 Canadian Neuroscience Meeting into the addictiveness of a commonly used sweeter made from corn. HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is refined from corn and is one of the cheapest sweeteners available to the food industry.

It is surprising as to where HFCS is found. From breakfast cereals all the way to biscuits and everything in-between.

Professor Lerri has shown that HFCS can cause behavioural reactions in rats similar to those as drugs of abuse such as cocaine.
