University of Adelaide researchers have announced that they will be conducting a study involving 1500 pre diabetic men between the ages of 50 and 74.

Testosterone treatment will be administered to half the group whilst the remaining participants will receive a placebo. The men will be followed up two years after the commencement of the testosterone therapy.

As men age their testosterone levels drop. along with this drop body mass declines whilst fat mass increases.

It is thought that this may be a cause of obesity which in turn can lead to the onset of type 2 diabetes.

The researches will also be trying to answer if weight loss which in itself increases testosterone levels or if administering testosterone has the best outcomes.

They will also be trying to ascertain whether the testosterone has any specific effects on the way that muscles use sugar.
